THE STORY BEHIND THE ART

I made my very first Vintage Girl in April 2015. It was a commission that needed to be a certain size and my pages were perfect for it. 

INSPIRATION

I used to secretly read spy comics as a child and was obsessed with this one character: Modesty Blaise. This illustration is exactly how I remember her and was painted for a Zodiac themed run of illustrations.

PROCESS AND MATERIALS

Each girl is handpainted with a variety of mediums like pencil, ink, watercolor, crayons and markers on vintage magazines. Most of the magazines are swedish with the oldest to date being from the late 1800s to the newest that is early 1960s. Most of the magazines are from vintage stores/thrift shops but some have been gifted to me from other artists and friends.

VINTAGE GIRLS

Childhood obsession with comic book girls on the pages of 1920s-1940s feminist magazines. Mixed media on vintage paper.

"Lisas work is post-feminist and very personal. It layers contemporary, personal images of proud female beauty on top of historical stereotypical female documents, juxtaposing them and also overpainting them. Gentle, beautiful vandalism."

The paper is scanned and digitally retouched, sometimes adding extra layers or detail. Programs used for this is mainly Photoshop and Krita, using a Wacom tablet. Read more about process, materials and inspiration under each collection page.
